Photos for music magazine

These are some of the photos i am going to use in my magazine. Some of the photos, I took of my friends band when they were practising for a gig as this gives it more effect and realistic as they had there intruments and mircophones with them. I made them dress in a sort of "indie" way that refelected what the target audience would wear in everyday life. In the other photos, they are more posed as it was an actual photoshoot. The band is called "Relentless Obsession". I made them stand against a back drop of graffti for effect as it looks good. They wore skinny jeans and hoodys which was good as this reflects the audiences style, also their music style.

This photo will be my main photo on my front cover.

Some of these will be little images on my front cover.

Fonts

So i need to decide what font i am going to use for my title of my magazine. I went onto the website "dafont".com which has a selection of lots of different types of fonts. These are a few ones that i found that i could use:

This font is cool because it looks handwritten and this represents the un-tidy approach i want to get across as the readers are the sorts of people who are "messy" and dont care about things looking neat.

I like this font as it it written in a weird sort of way that shows the uniquness of the readers.

This is really bold so it would stand out well on the front cover. Again, it has a unique style of writting which compliments the readers and draws them in.

This font is bold so it wil stand out and also, like the first font i showed you, it has a "messy" feel. This is a strong possablity for my title font.

I like this font as well though! Its a font that really represents the readers style, its unique and "messy". I think i am going to use this font for my magazine.

8/12/09

I have actually found a normal font on Indesgin that i am goin to use now. It called "An unfortunite event".

BEAT IT
My font needs to be funky, fresh and young as these are the types of things that compliment the magazine i will create. The readers will also have to be attracted to the magazine by not only the main pictures and storys but also by the first thing they look at...the title of the magazine ("beat it").

Annaysis of double page spreads

This is a double page spread in the magazine NME. They have used a bright blue colour to make the page eye catching. They have used this on the "quotes" that are involved in the article and the title of it. The title "the teenagers", is band name but also has the personal effect to the readers because most of them themselves are teenagers. The main picture of this double page connects to the subject of the article. The photo is of the band and the article is all about them. This photo dominates the left hand page but they have incorprited text boxes ontop of the photo so that its not just a boring photo but also people, when looking at the photo, also notice the text aswell. The colours in the photo are dull compared to the bright blue, however this is a good contrast because it makes things not linked together and become unclear to read. There are also three other smaller photos on the opposite side of the double page of the main photo. This is a good thing because it shows that the other photos are completly different and nothing to do with the band "The teengers". Next to each smaller photo is a text box about the band with is featured in the picture. One of the photos and band text is linked into a famous singer "alex turner" of the artic monkeys and the last shadow puppets (bands). The readers will be interesting to read this as they aspire to be like that famous person. It says that "the rascals" are Turner's favourite band at that moment in time, therefore the readers want to listen to this band to be like there "role model". The main article has one of the bright blue boxed writting stating a quote from one member of "the teenagers" which says "of course we are a sexual band, we are the teengers and thats all they think about". This can be personal to the readers as again, some are between the ages of 15-18 and can link into the band and being a teenager. The very first letter of the article "T" is in bold to show that it is the start of the article and starts the whole thing off very powerfully. On the left hand side of the double page in big bold letters it says "Everybodys talking about...". Now this grabs the readers eye because they obviously want to know whats being talked about and want to look "cool".

Annaysis of double page spreads

This is a contents page of the magazine "Kerrang". This is made clear by the title of "contents". The actual contents is placed on the right hand side down a collum. Each title of each page is bold in black and yellow which ties into the title of "Contents". However, underneath all these little subtitles that are in the contents, they give only the name of the band and nothing else about what information you will read about that band. This is a good selling technique as the reader has to read it to know what the actual story is about instead of just glimpsing at the phrase about the page. There are loads of small images of famous singers/bands in a grid formation at the left hand side to the middle of the page. Each of these images have a number on to show what page that photo is shown on. This makes it clear to the reader which page he/she can turn to to fin out about their favourite band or so on. However, one is slightly bigger (22). At the very top of the page there is a paragraph by the main writer/editor of the magazine. It's just a little note about what you can expect to find in the magazine and its made personal as it written personally by him and to the reader. Its mostly about the main sell Biffy Clyro. It fits into the cover of this magazine by using the same red colour, black and white. however they have added in the colour yellow to make some of the subtitles etc stand out, for example, "Album reviews" which is on the collum of pages shown in this magazine. At the bottom right hand side underneath the main contents page list, there is a text/picture about getting a weekly Kerrang magazine for a special offer of £6 a month. This reminds the readers that this magazine is released every week and they can get it for a good price if they subscribe to it.

annaysis of front cover

"Kerrang" is a very catchy name because its bold and powerful. This front cover is very clear with its big title and main sell. The font they have used for "Kerrang" is like broken glass. They have used this because it represents the harsh powerful sound of the word "kerrang". They have used few colours on this cover, they have only used black, red and white. however this is effective as it connects everything together. It also reflects the type of target audience becuase the readers would wear dark clothes and be into harsh bold and powerful music aswell as colours. These colours also link into the main picture of Biffy Clyro, the clothes are plain and have a "hard-metal" atmosphere about them. "unfold the puzzle of life..." is rather abstract and it an enigma to make the readers want to find out more and for the phrase to explain itself. The main sell is about Biffy Clyro so they have used a picture of him as it main photo. This gives a clear indication of what type of music it is and also what the main story is about. I think they have used a "triangle" formation with the three band members to show the main singer in the front and this indicates that the story will be either an interview with him or just about him. There is a bar code at the bottom of the cover that also says the date and price of the magazine (£4.50). Some of the other storys presented in this magazine are about other bands and this includes a poster. Many people would even buy this magazine ewven just for the poster if they really liked the band/artist. So putting the poster in is a very good way of selling this magazine.
NME stands for "new music express" so the title really links into the theme of the magazine (new and modern music). They have shortened it because its more catchy to say and remember. The font of the title is red and bold in capital letters. The red really stands out as its the only red on the cover. There is also a rim of white and black around the title "NME" i think this is for pure effect to make it stand out more. However they have also used bold colours like yellow, blue and red. On this cover they have used a bold colour for each main "story" for example, "The Wombats..." in yellow. The main picture is of The Wombats because the main sell is all about them. The photo is quite dull in colour as they are wearing browns and dark colours. This makes the writing on the cover stand out even more. The language on this cover is fairy simple and unformal. There are no "big/hard" words that people wouldn't understand. At the bottom right numbers are used in the front cover to represent that double page in the magazine "569 UK GIGS LISTED". The wombats main sell also says "Why britians gone silly for the lords of the indie dancefloor" the readers then want to know WHY and also the whole phrase is pretty abstract but seem interesting so that the readers want to read the story to find out what its really about. The target audience for this magazine is manly 17-30 year old. The cover appeals to this target audience as its quite "untidy" looking, as in, the slanted words and "un-posed", fun, photo of the wombats. Also, the colours are so bold and bright which makes it more immature. The main sell is obviously about "The Wombats" as it is places right in the center of the front cover. There is a bar code, however it has been kind of disguised in one of the "extra" bits that are shown in the main magazine. It has been incorprited into the "569 UK GIGS LISTED", it has been places on its side at the bottom of this text. Next to the bar code it also shows the price (£2.50) and date of the magazine. I think they have done this because they dont want it to be the main thing that readers see. I mean, why would they want the readers to see the price? obviously they want them to pick it up and buy it anyway because of the main sell etc. The main flash storys consist of an interview with Johnny Marr and the Cribs. Also, they have storys of famous bands/artists which tell us personal storys about these people. For example, Muse-"i was sick before going onstage at Wembley".

Thursday, 22 October 2009

My new coursework Project is to create a music magazine. I have decided to a magazine with the music genre indie/alternative because it is the music i like best and listen to the most. Some magazines that already have this genre are such mags as "NME" and "kerrang!".
First i am going to look at what target audiences these magazines are for and then create a typical reader profile.

NME
Age: 17-30
Music they like: Indie/Alternative
Gender: Men
Frequency of buying the mag: weekly
25000 people in middle class or higher read this magazine.
13700 people in working class read this magazine.
29600 men read the magazine
91000 women read this magazine.
Interests: going to parties and gigs

Kerrang!
23900 people in middle class or higher read this magazine.
17800 people in working class read this magazine.
29000 men read this magazine.
12700 women read this magazine.
Music they like: Indie/Alternative/rock
Gender: both
Frequency of buying the mag: weekly
Interests: gigs and drinking.

Therefore my target audience for my music magazine will be mixed genders but aimed towards men mostly. They will be into new and modern bands that have the genre of indie /alternative or rock. The age of my audience will be around the ages of 17-30 years old. Lifestyle of these readers would be anything from working class to higher class but i would think that mostly only working class-middle class would buy this magazine. I think this because higher class people are into more "civilized" genres of music. They would earn a fair amount of money and would have some spare for gigs etc. The target audience will have a good style of clothing and it would be very modern. Most of them will live in a family home or a flat with mates. Also, they will be a mixture of individualists and Aspirer's, however some will be "good-timers" in which they will love to party/go to gigs and drink. I think they will be in the sections called C2 and D manly as these people are middle class-lower class. Also, most of them would be "good-timers" as the magazine lets people knows about gigs and festivals going on around Britian. Therefore readers are the sort of people who like to go and see lots of bands etc around the world and like to travel. They also like partying/festivals and gigs. Another word that could described as YAKS. these are people who are single, out-going, young, adventous and keen. Target audiences are important because without knowing what target audience you are setting, the advertising/magazine would find it very difficult and expensice to sell as they have to cater for so so so many different sorts of people. Knowing and finding a target audience is one of the most important stages in the market.

Photos for college magazine

This is my main photo on my front page, it is a photo of me that i took on my webcam just before the Freshers Party. I decided to use this photo because the main story is all about the Freshers Party. The anchor and stripy top puts all the theme together.

One of my pages in my magazine is all about the Art and Photography students new work. So i put this photo up that i took of a sunset on holiday.

College Magazine Coursework

Our coursework is to make a college magazine. I have created the front cover and contents page and the magazine will have a target audience of 16-18 year olds.
